Water: presence and absence.

So... tonight was the opening of the exhibition at the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre. It was very well attended. There were opening speeches and a Dharug and Gundungurra smoking ceremony. There were two exhibitions opening: the first, Lost Song, an exhibition about the endangered Regent Honeyeater. There are now not enough mature male birds left to teach the younger males the mating call and their song is dying out. The second opening was the exhibition on Water that Rochelle, Tracy and Will have contributed to.

The Mountain Orange Gum grows at Frogknot, the Water Gum near Rochelle's home and the Grey Mangrove at Tracy's. All three trees grow in the catchment area of the Clarence River. Rochelle did all the paintings, Tracy did the metal work and Will made sound recordings at the locations of all the trees and in different locations along the Clarence River from its source to the ocean.

It was a two-hour journey there and back. I visited the new Art Gallery of New South Wales, had a wander around the harbour to the Museum of Contemporary Art and then back through the city to Darling Harbour before catching the train back to Katoomba.

To the Blue Mountains.

So...today our trip to the Blue Mountains in New South Wales began. We got up at 3.00 am and set off at 4.00 am. According to Google Maps it was just over a 9 hour journey. We arrived in Katoomba at 3.45 pm NSW time (2.45 pm Qld time) almost 11 hours since we set off, but we had stopped for breakfast in Tamworth and Lunch in Mudgee.

We are here for a week. Tomorrow we begin setting up the exhibition Tracy, Rochelle and Will have been working on for the Katoomba Art Gallery. The exhibition opens on Friday.

The road to Katoomba. Driving through Bolivia just after dawn.
