'Here's Possy!'

So...just when we thought it was safe to uncover our mandarins...the possum burglar is back from the dead!In the break-in last night a jar of instant coffee was smashed and a loaf of bread nibbled. Time to set those traps again!Update:So...tonight the brazen beast crept in while we were watching TV. Will got up to make a hot drink and reaching out in the darkness to switch on the light he spotted a small horned creature crouched atop the fridge. He screamed out and dashed his hand back sending spice bottles and onions flying in all directions. I cried out in alarm thinking he had done himself a mischief but it was just that flippin' possum! It got a scare too so hopefully will think twice about coming back.

Hey Rain!

So...we have finally had some rain after waiting at least three months without a drop. Our poor garden is withered and we have only been able to save certain plants and trees with the water from the washing machine.Last week rain was predicted and it passed us by yet again and yesterday it appeared that the same was about to happen again but in the late afternoon it finally started to rain and we have ended up over night with 21 mls. Today there have been showers on and off and we have picked up another 5 mls. It is the first rain we have had since we levelled out and set the tanks for Blue Moon but they are nowhere near full. It has not been enough to raise the level of the dam but the ground has had a good soaking and our tank at the back of Frogknot is nearly full again.Everything is has been so dry and brown  but hopefully we will now see the return of some 'green'!

Operation Fox Foil!

So...we have been finding lots of fox scats about the place recently and a few nights ago went out in the darkness when after hearing a scream and then we heard a fox barking continually for a while. It seems it is the fox mating season until the middle of July. Heck! we really don't need any more. While our neighbours are away we are looking after their chooks. The other day I went over and let them out to forage in the garden then came home for lunch. While we were having lunch we heard our chooks and guinea fowl causing a commotion and went out to find a fox stalking them. The fox mustn't have seen me approaching at first and I was thinking it was quite brazen to continue wandering along the edge of the bush peering at the birds. It was lucky I didn't have a gun or it would have been a 'goner'. Suddenly it spotted me and dashed off up the road and disappeared. Will and I had to go back over to our neighbours and chase their hens back into their pen while the fox was about. Then we came back home and got our hens back into safety.I set the fox trap that night and only caught a greedy possum...but caught nothing last night. We shall keep trying.

Possum Burglar Update.

So... since we finally decided to do something about our nocturnal intruder, and we set the trap, the burglar has not been back. We hope it has moved on to a better life and is not rotting in the roof having succumbed to the packet of rat poison it ate.Thankfully it was not Caliban, our one-eyed possum who was sat atop one of the verandah poles on Blue Moon the other night.IMG_20180627_215028789 (Medium)
